Skiathos
Skiathos is a beautiful, largely unspoilt island in the Aegean Sea. It lies approximately 6 miles off the coast of mainland Greece in the Northern Sporades. We have been lucky enough over the years to make many life long friends here. Let me share with you some of my favourite people and places of this wonderful island.
The Old Harbour
One of my very favourite places to spend time is down on the old harbour. There is nothing better than enjoying a tispero meze at one of the tavernas or a glass of wine in one of the bars and watching the world pass by. And if you are lucky enough to visit out of the summer season you will get to see it without all of the tourist boats blocking the view and just a small scattering of the traditional fishing boats.
Traditional tavernas
Although the island has many new and exciting food options opening every year to try there are still some very good family run traditional tavernas to be found for very good home cooked greek food. I openly admit to being a foodie and will try (almost!) anything. Some places are better than others of course although this is only a personal preference but I must admit I've never had a meal I wouldn't repeat anywhere on this island and I've been coming for over 25 years now. It's well worth taking the time to find some of the original (local) ones.
Coastline
You can't write about Skiathos without mentioning the stunning coastline. Skiathos is blessed with many idyllic and stunning beaches. The south side of the island has the more accessible and calmer of the coastline but its worth a venture over to the North of the island to find a few more windswept and natural beaches to enjoy. I am always surprised at how different all of the beaches are around such a small island.
Friends
Skiathos has a well deserved reputation as a friendly destination. We have made so many good friends over the years and I know how hard the locals work not just through the summer months to keep the island looking the way it does and working to provide a wonderful holiday destination for all. They are rightfully proud of this beautiful island. If you are visiting take the time to chat and acknowledge the lovely locals living here.
