Another kitchen renovation which was very different from the Skiathos townhouses. A wonderful Victorian terrace property in the Spa town of Cheltenham.

In the wonderful 'village' type area of Tivoli in Cheltenham there are streets of wonderful old victorian properties. This mid terrace was in dire need of an upgrade especially in the back area of the property. We ripped out the old kitchen and complete back wall to rebuild a light, spacious kitchen and living area.

When designing a kitchen and living area so much needs to be considered as so much has changed about how we now use and live in our homes. The kitchen used to be a 'work' and utilitarian area but now is arguably the most important part of the home. We are now 'living' in these areas and as such need to, while stay practical, be a comfortable and well designed area to be in.

I always feel that properties should reflect their owners. Trends come and go so I feel to follow the current trends when replacing your kitchen is a bad idea and you should spend time collecting ideas and inspiration of designs you like rather than what is in the magazines at that moment.

However, with that in mind, this project was in a property for the rental market so needed to be attractive to a wide range of potential clients and not be too personalised.

To achieve this a neutral palette was used on a mid range kitchen and the budget spent on hardwearing, attractive Corian worktops which I always think give a wonderful lux feel at a fraction of the cost of granite or other stone tops. This enables a seamless finish around the sink areas and looks great when used as a splash back as well.

Velux windows light the new dining area now made an integral part of the kitchen with an additional 'snug' created which can be used as a study or TV area.

Lighting needs consideration as well in such an important area. Under cupboard lights, spotlights, pendants and wall lights give many options to illuminate various areas as they are in use.

I always think its nice not to overcrowd the walls with cupboards if you can afford to space wise as this will also give a more 'living' space rather than a kitchen feel.

Built in ovens are very popular now but I think in a period property especially a range gives a focal point to the space. Underfloor heating is wonderful as it illuminates the need for radiators giving more wall space for storage solutions.
